The Ice-Storm Cometh

Everything at Garnett was cancelled this morning because of ice.

My first thought when I heard the news from our administrator last night: Next week’s message is in the can and ready to go!

My second thought: Uh oh, how are we ever gonna make up the collection?

My third thought: I’m going to a movie!

My fourth thought: If it’s too icy for church it’s probably too icy to go to a Saturday night movie.

I love to preach on Sunday mornings. I also enjoy getting an unexpected Sunday off.

In order to love preaching on Sundays, my routine for preparation demands that I spend Saturday nights getting ready. Sometimes this is enjoyable. Sometimes it is a grind. Last night was a welcome break.

Sometimes I go to bed on Saturday nights praying for an ice-storm to blow in overnight so that I don’t have to preach the sermon I’ve prepared. I’ve had only one of these prayers answered in my nine-year preaching career. I’ve learned that if you are going to write a bad sermon, try to do it in the winter. So far all of my August ice-storm prayers have gone unanswered.

  1. You should move your ministry to Siberia! I prayed for many a similar ice storm here when my finished product or struggling Russian was far below what it should have been. Funny thing was I normally got my ice storm in the winter (fall and spring too) but lo and behold no one cancelled church over it! Dope!!!

Hope you enjoyed your day off. You did spend it with the fam, yes?

I’m in Novo right now actually recounting fond Wade memories with your old roomie Shishkin. He’s ticked that the Bono link above is now available only by paying something. You got an archived copy of that? For your old roommate??

  2. This has been a week-end lesson in family togetherness! The kids and I actually went bowling twice with dad this weekend, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. We were getting cabin fever. When dad goes, it is a BIG DEAL. My kids won’t remember missing church, (they say we go all the time), but they will remember dad bowling 6 strikes on an icy Sunday. I think God, “THE FATHER”, would be proud.

  3. You know, some of the sermons I felt strongest about are the very ones that I’ve been ‘snowed’ or ‘iced’ out of. Hmmm. Wonder if someone is trying to tell me something.

  4. I was very sad not to be up early before the heat goes on in church to wait for the crew to slowly drag in. I slept until ten or so then read then slept with a kid on top of me. Life was good. Sad I missed you, HOW YOU DO”N? Rock on dude!

  5. I must admit, I can relate. Unfortunately for me, winter or summer my prayers for an ice storm have only been answered once. We just don’t get much ice in Atlanta.

So, what are you thinking?
