Jesus and the Kingdom of God

Last night I started teaching a class I’m calling, “Jesus and the Kingdom of God.” It’s grown out of the Bible study I’ve been doing with our leadership team on the same subject. As a way of introducing the series I asked everyone to define in one sentence what they believed Jesus meant by the phrase “Kingdom of God.” Most found it to be a difficult exercise. I then told them that I had asked them to do something Jesus never did himself. In all his teachings, he never came out and defined the Kingdom of God in a propositional way. He announced that it was near. He told stories about it. He acted it out in his miracles and dining habits. But he never defined it. He refused to intellectualize it. Instead, he invited people to participate in it and experience it for themelves. I hope I can do the same in my class.

So, what are you thinking?
