I watched Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedian over the holidays. It gives great insights into the life of a stand-up comedian. Seinfeld has always come off looking so composed and with it on stage, but this documentary shows us a different side. He’s nervous, forgetful, and has trouble finding a comfort zone on stage. I really didn’t realize how much polish goes into a stand-up act before we ever see it on the David Letterman show.
What drew me in the most was the insecurity of the comedians. They sweat every joke. They long for the audience’s approval. They blame the audience when they don’t get it. Then they blame themselves. Then they get back on stage to try it again, hoping this time the crowd will like them.
Kind of reminded me of myself and every other preacher I’ve ever met.
