Back to Normal (Almost)

We’ve been snowed/iced in since Thursday morning. Yesterday we canceled services at Garnett because the parking lot and sidewalks were treacherous. While we’ve enjoyed playing in the snow and all the time together we’ve had as a family, we’ve also got a bad case of cabin fever. This morning everyone woke up ready for things to get back to normal. Heather took Caleb to school and found out that his school is closed today. She called me and asked if she could leave him there anyway, but I talked her out of it.

This was a record setting storm for Tulsa in the areas of snow fall and low temps. Our community is simply not equipped to handle this kind of thing.

One of the advantages of being snowed is that you can get some serious reading done. I worked through Brueggemann’s Cadence’s of Home and Frost’s Exiles. Both are good. Since Frost’s book is based on Brueggemann’s, it was helpful to read them in tandem.

I’m thinking about doing some teaching from the exilic literature next year. I’m especially drawn to Daniel right now. If you know any good resources for such a study, leave a comment.

It wasn’t Romo’s best day yesterday and yet he did something important. He did what he needed to do to win in New York. Things are looking good in Cowboyland.

  1. Hey Wade,

I always enjoy reading your thoughts on this blog. I also enjoy hearing you speak at the Workshop. I’d love for you to visit my blog and leave a comment on my latest post regarding preaching prep. Thanks and keep up the good work.

  2. Hey Wade,

We were spared the snow here in Tennessee.

There is a great study by Mike Strawn on Daniel that rocked my world. Some of his studies can be found at http://www.representationalresources.com/

    Blessings!

  3. I found Jim McGuiggan commentary on Daniel to be a good resource.

  4. Wade,

Thanks for taking the time to come over to my blog and comment. Keep up the great work.

  5. I am really wanting Exiles. How does it compare to Shaping of things to come? I really enjoyed that one. Also David Fraze says hi. See you soon. Have a great week.

  6. Daniel is certainly a worthy challenge for preaching.

For a critical commentary on the Hebrew and Aramaic Text of Daniel I would recommend:

Collins, John J. Daniel: A Commentary on The Book of Daniel. Ed. F. M. Cross. Hermeneia. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1993.

For preaching I like Daniel in the Knox preaching guides (ISBN: 0804232245) by John G. Gammie. These are out of print, but you can still buy them through a good used book seller like:

    http://tinyurl.com/ylnpg2

    On another note:

Do you know Oliver Howard that used to speak at Pepperdine? Is he still in Tulsa? He is a lawyer by trade I believe and used to be at the Southern Hills Church of Christ.

    Peace.

  7. I am looking foward to “Daniel” as I can’t say I have ever really heard much about this book other than the Daniel in the lions den story. Wasn’t the snow great! Lynn

So, what are you thinking?
