I got up this morning at 5:30 to catch a flight out to Lubbock. I spent the day there visiting my grandparents–ages 95 and 86. They’re both ailing and I wanted to see them before the summer ended. I’m about to catch my flight back to Tulsa.
I grew up in West Texas, out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by tumbleweeds, pump jacks, and cotton fields. The green cotton fields I liked, except when I was hoeing them. There are also some great people who live in West Texas and oh yeah, there are some tremendous sunsets.
However, all it took was a day back there to remind me why I’m glad I don’t live there anymore. I was really blessed to be able to go from West Texas to Bellingham, Washington. I’m blessed to be living in the Green Country of Northeast Oklahoma. Sometimes Tulsans complain about the scenery around Tulsa. All that does is tell me that they’ve never lived in West Texas.
Please, no hate mail from you wonderful West Texans out there. I grew up there and I know what I’m talking about. You’re great people, you just live in a very flat, scenery challenged place.
I was born and raised in Lubbock and now live in Southeast Texas. I am still a Texas girl. No hate e-mail here, just thought I would let you know that you should have stayed in Texas!!!! The traitor part comes from leaving!!!!
Really, I understand. I have no desire to go back to Lubbock. In fact, my parents just moved from Lubbock to Corsicana. My dad had lived all his life, 84 years, in Lubbock and it has been a hard move for them. But they are adjusting.
Hope you had a great visit with your grandparents and I know they enjoyed it!!!! Grandparents love to see their grandchildren!
Over the last few weeks i’ve been working in West Texas and then last week had the opportunity to go to the fair city of Tulsa for three days. For a guy that grew up 10 minutes from the beach in So. Cal., college in Portland, OR. and now resides in Austin, Texas…i’ve come to enjoy every town I visit except one: Bakersfield, CA.
No hate mail. Let me just say I’m disappointed in you. The two best scenes in life were: my wife in her denim dress and the sunset between Odessa and Andrews. Both of those were in West Texas.
Go to this post and say something nice about the West Texas sunsets and maybe, just maybe you might regain some esteem.
Not West Texas as usual with all this rain…we’ve already beat our annual amounts at mid-year. Not sure how we got linked at facebook but it’s cool…thanks for giving me the gmail account all those years ago!
There is a story that after God made the world He set about to decorate it. To some places he gave forests, or oceans, or rivers, or hills or mountains. He ran out of time before He was able to decorate West Texas. So, God said, I’ll just have to make people who will love it.
