My boys are suddenly obsessed with trophies. That’s all they want to talk about. I have a couple of my old trophies stashed in a closet. They found them and have been begging to look at them. Finally, Caleb, 5 1/2 years old, asked me if he could have one to keep.
I said, “No.”
He said, “Why not?”
I said, “Because you haven’t won anything. Go win something and you’ll get a trophy.”
He said, “But you’re not letting me play anything!”
Somebody order that kid a trophy. He just won his first debate.
A few minutes later, Elijah (4 years old) and I were looking at my trophies. He pointed at one and asked what place I came in to get it.
He was pointing at the Little Dribblers National Championship trophy I won when I was 10 years old. I still have it because it’s a national championship trophy and I don’t think you should throw those things away and because I knew this day would come. I’ve kept a second trophy that I’m far more proud of, but I’ll hold off bragging about that one until another day.
I said, “I got that one for coming in 1st place.”
He said, “First place?!”
I said, “Yep. I was a champion.”
He hugged me hard and said, “Good job daddy!”
It was as if I had won it all over again.
I’m glad I kept it.
Haha!!! Your boys are adorable! We always have so much fun…
Dude, kids are the best!
They give out trophies for getting saliva all over your shirt? Cool.
Brad beat me to it.
Suddenly I feel diminished and oppressed since I have no sports trophies in my closet for my children to find and idolize me over.
They say we all get 15 minutes… Hope you didn’t peak too soon ;-0!?! Gotta love those little men.
Wade,
You shouldn’t take much about the second trophy. It’s FREE to anyone who can THROW like you.
Sam
Yeah, I too am going to tell my kids that my participation trophy in under 10 soccer was for a national championship.
Good call,
Jay
I have a few baseball trophies, but I have a 3rd place medal that I won at age 9 for wrestling. I was one of three people in my division for that particular tournament, so some consider it to be a charity award. For some reason that is my most prized “trophy”. Maybe there is a great message to be given to my 10 month old, when he runs across it someday. Who knows? Thanks for the post.
My dad used to organize BMX races when I was little. I entered one race and took third place dispite crashing early on in the race. The rest of the story is that there were only three riders competing. They had to postpone the next race in order to allow me to finish.
