In The Reason for God, Tim Keller tells about how Flannery O’Connor was once asked to put the meaning of one of her stories “in a nutshell.” She responded that, if she could have put the meaning into a nutshell, she wouldn’t have had to write the story.
I love it.
How many times do we feel compelled to put the message of the Bible or an explanation of the gospel into a nutshell? It seems to me that if God had wanted us to communicate truth “in a nutshell,” he’d have given us a peanut instead of the Bible.
I don’t know, Wade. I’m pretty sure I can narrow the gospel down to five things using the acronym J.E.S.U.S. Keller and O’Connor don’t know what they are talking about!
I thought it was five steps…. Doh!
